Diesel Injector Servicing, The Basics

Gradually over time nozzles on the diesel injector, pump and piston will get a build up of carbon and varnish. This will normally happen to engines that don't use diesel fuel additives in every fill up or fuel, or will happen naturally over time when you've driven lots of miles. Also if you drive around town quite a bit the stop-and-go metro driving can create deposits much faster than motorway driving. These build-ups can occur on any internal combustion engine, whether it burns gasoline or diesel. If you have a Diesel engine, then you will at some stage need diesel injector servicing.
Quite often with older high-mileage diesel cars, diesel injector servicing will involve performing a diesel purge or to clean the injectors and injection pump. But this is not just to just dump some liquid into the fuel tank. While that should be done and is often part of a good prevention plan you will sometimes need to clean the components directly. The results from this can be fantastic in terms of power, producing less smoke, easier to start, better acceleration and overall better performance. This process can be used on any diesel that is not common rail-injection.Most car manufacturers will say that diesel injectors should be cleaned every 100,000 miles of driving. To clean your diesel injector you need some common tools and a few unique items. The easiest way to clean the diesel injectors is to pick up a standard diesel fuel purge kit. This will usually come with 2 bottles of cleaning solution, designed to put pressure on the insides of the diesel injectors and force the contaminants out. In addition to this you need 2 fuel hoses and a large bottle to accommodate the fuel hoses. You will also need a ratchet set, a screwdriver and some pliers. For simpler injector cleaning you can use a bottled injector cleaner which is added directly into the system.
Diesel injector servicing has a few things you need to watch out for. One of the most important steps is finding the supply and return valves for the fuel. Supply valves will bring new fuel into injectors, while return valves process used fuel. The supply line will usually have a small filter attached on it. You must disconnect the original hoses and then attach the new hoses that are connected to the bottle. In a way you will be creating an external fuel injector line. Then you need to dump the cleaner into the bottle. Fire up the engine and rev it to various speeds. Changing your engine speed is a must to ensure that the different areas of the injectors are cleaned properly. Once done you must replace the original parts.
